Summary of early July - early October

I began working with Progeos in July 2012. This is the first time I have worked on a project of this large scope, and it initially took many weeks to learn the systems involved and how they interact. First I had to familiarize myself with .NET, of which I had no prior experience. Ironspeed Designer is used as a broad design tool, from which I add customization to web applications. Learning Ironspeed took some time as well and I continue to learn ways of using it more effectively. Other related technologies of which I had some prior experience but have gained / am gaining further knowledge of include SQL, javascript, AJAX, HTML and Crystal Reports. By the end of the summer I had gained a lot of knowledge and had begun modifying and developing web applications. My first accomplishment was to create an updated version of our municipal permitting software for Charlton, MA. This involved functionality and aesthetic updates to the web forms, UI and reports. With this project completed, I began work on Progeos v2.0. I studied the company's database structure and collaborated with Tim, the project manager, to make desirable changes to the database structure on which the application would depend. This required some additional study of spatial SQL and Cadcorp software to gain an understanding of the internal processes and effectively integrate map data into web applications. The first area I have focused on for Progeos v2.0 is point data. After understanding the main functions required for point data, including reporting from map entries, converting those reports to points, categorizing points, adding actions to points and integrating employee data with points and actions, I have begun prototyping the logic and UI to handle these functions. I customized the application to display, search/sort and navigate through point data retrieved from the database in an intuitive, concise interface. Forms to add and edit points were also developed.
