Call for Judges

Southern Connecticut Invitational Science & Engineering Fair (SCISEF) ... Saturday February 9, 2013

Amity Regional High School .. 25 Newton Road .. Woodbridge, Connecticut 06525

Individuals with a background in one of the sciences, engineering or mathematics are needed to serve as judges for the 13th Annual Southern Connecticut Invitational Science & Engineering Fair (SCISEF) to be held Saturday February 9, 2013 at Amity Regional High School in Woodbridge.

What does being a judge involve?

·On the day of the Fair (February 9, 2013):Judging 5-8 projects or research proposals in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, or Engineering.Judges are to arrive at the fair by 8:00 am on Saturday, and will be finished with judging by 1:00 pm.Judges are encouraged to stay for the Keynote Speaker and awards presentation that will begin at 1:30 pm, but are free to leave as soon as their team completes its assigned projects.

·Judges will be offered on-line training via the fair website, www.scisef.org.After judges check-in at

8:00 a.m on fair day, they will assemble with the other members of their team to review the projects assigned in advance, plus any additional assignments for their team.

SCISEF began in 2001 with 8 students, all from Staples High School in Westport. In 2011 there were 159projects submitted; schools from across the region were represented. We expect the 13th annual fair to have more than 200 entries from several area high schools.

Judges work in teams of 2 or 3 members, each with a “captain” who has served as a judge previously. Each project is evaluated by 2 teams.Having as many judges as there are projects keeps the judging process manageable. It is important that the judging be concluded by 1 pm, so that the keynote presentation and awards ceremony can be held beginning at 1:30 pm.A continental breakfast and sandwich lunch will be provided to all judges.

Keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Emma J. Rosi-Marshall, Associate Scientist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies.

SCISEF is sponsored by the Southern Connecticut Science & Engineering Foundation, Inc. (SCSEF), a 501(c) (3) organization.

If you have colleagues or friends whom you feel would be good judges, please encourage them to contact me, or forward their names to me so that I can contact them. We will need more than 200 judges for this fair!!!

I look forward to hearing from you.Thank you for all your help.
